A `!Basic Command Unit`! (BCU) is the largest unit into which `F33f`_`[territorial`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Territorial_police_force]`_`f `F33f`_`[British Police`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Law_enforcement_in_the_United_Kingdom]`_`f forces are divided. BCU replaces the earlier terms `*Sub-Division`* and `*Division`* that had been in use since the 1880s. BCUs may alternatively be called an `*Area Command`* or a `*Division`*. They will also contain smaller, more local teams which are often called a `*Local Policing Unit`* (LPU) or a `*Local Policing Team`* (LPT). There are 228 BCUs (or equivalent units) in England and Wales.

Most forces are divided into at least three BCUs and some have many more. Most BCUs are further subdivided into smaller units. Until recently the `F33f`_`[Metropolitan Police`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Metropolitan_Police]`_`f used the term `!Borough Operational Command Unit`! (BOCU) for regional units within `F33f`_`[Frontline Policing`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Organisation_and_structure_of_the_Metropolitan_Police]`_`f (previously known as Territorial Policing), the subdivision of the Met responsible for day-to-day policing within the 32 `F33f`_`[London boroughs`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=London_boroughs]`_`f.

`F33f`_`[Warwickshire Police`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Warwickshire_Police]`_`f has abolished BCUs, the first British territorial police force to do so. The force is now divided directly into five Districts, each headed by a `F33f`_`[Chief Inspector`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Chief_inspector]`_`f. These were formerly grouped into two Areas (BCUs), North and South, each headed by a `F33f`_`[Chief Superintendent`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Chief_superintendent]`_`f.
